QR codes had their pandemic glow-up when contactless menus became a public health necessity, and they never really left.

But here's the thing: URL shorteners didn't go anywhere either. They're embedded in every email marketing platform, every SMS campaign, every social bio, and every analytics dashboard worth using. These two technologies have been coexisting for years, but they're increasingly competing for the same real estate — the critical moment when a user needs to get from the physical or digital world to a specific web destination.

So which one actually wins? The honest answer: it depends. But unpacking why it depends tells you a lot about how mobile web culture is evolving — and what developers and marketers should be building for.

The QR Code Comeback Is Real, But Uneven

QR code adoption in the US was genuinely sluggish for years. American consumers, unlike their counterparts in China where WeChat made QR scanning second nature, were slow to build the habit. Then COVID hit, restaurants needed touchless menus, and suddenly scanning a code felt less like a tech-enthusiast party trick and more like basic hygiene.

The numbers reflect the shift. According to data from Statista, QR code interactions in the US grew by over 40 percent between 2020 and 2023. MobileIron research found that 83 percent of US smartphone users had scanned a QR code at least once. That's mainstream adoption by any definition.

But adoption isn't the same as preference. QR codes shine in specific contexts: physical environments where typing is impractical, situations where the audience is already holding a phone, and campaigns where the marketer controls the surface (a poster, a package, a table tent). They're genuinely great for bridging offline to online.

The friction, though, is real. You need to open a camera app. You need decent lighting. You need the code to be printed at a size and quality that actually scans. And increasingly, you need to trust that the code hasn't been tampered with — a concern we'll come back to.

Where Short URLs Still Dominate

For pure digital distribution, short URLs remain the gold standard, and it's not particularly close. Email campaigns, SMS marketing, social media posts, Slack messages, Discord servers — anywhere text travels, a compact, clickable link wins. QR codes are functionally useless in these environments. You can't scan your own screen.

The attack surface is physical, which makes it harder to defend against technically.

For developers building anything security-sensitive, neither format gets a free pass. Both require the same hygiene: use managed, monitored links, implement destination verification, and educate end users about the risks of scanning unfamiliar codes or clicking unrecognized links.

What Enterprises Are Actually Doing

Large organizations aren't choosing one format over the other — they're using both, strategically segmented by use case. A retail brand might use QR codes on product packaging for setup guides and warranty registration (offline-to-online, high trust environment) while relying on short URLs for email campaigns, customer support links, and developer documentation.

You're not betting on one format — you're using both as output options from a single source of truth.

For marketers, the context question matters more than any format preference. If your audience is in front of a screen, give them a link. If they're holding a physical object, give them a QR code. If you're not sure, give them both.

The real loser in this comparison isn't either technology — it's the approach of distributing raw, unmanaged URLs with no tracking, no redirect control, and no analytics. Whether it's a bare link or a static QR code that you can't update, unmanaged distribution is the format that actually loses in 2024.
