But adoption across the broader web is minimal. Most publishers, developers, and marketers simply don't think about link permanence until something breaks.

For developers, there are practical steps worth taking right now. Tools like linkchecker, Screaming Frog, and various CI/CD integrations can automatically flag dead links in documentation repositories before they become someone else's problem. If you're managing a content site, a monthly link audit isn't glamorous work, but it's the kind of maintenance that separates professional operations from abandoned projects.

What Shortened URLs Reveal About Web Health

Here's an angle that doesn't get discussed enough: URL shorteners are actually useful diagnostic tools for link rot. When you use a service that provides analytics — and any serious shortener should — you can see exactly when click traffic on a link drops to zero. That's often the first signal that a destination has gone dark, even before you manually check it.
